Fax Adapters for Physical Fax machines

In general, fax machines and copiers that need to send outbound faxes are hooked up to a small analog adapter like the one pictured here. We recommend the Linksys and Cisco adapters which are common to find under the part number SPA112. Other models and brands may work, but these are the ones we recommend.

When fully setup, you should see a solid green power light, internet icon, and 1 solid phone light. These devices provide a simple analog connection back to our system by connecting to the internet and the fax machine. If the connection to our system cannot be made, or fails authentication, then the device will not provide dial tone to the fax machine. These devices are assigned to an extension, or one extension per port. They support 2 analog lines per device. Typically they will be deployed somewhere near the fax machine where a network connection is available. Sometimes they are deployed in a central wiring closet where both voice and data network runs come together.

On the back of the adapter you should have 3 cables, power, internet/network, and phone line that goes to the fax machine.

If you do not see all 3 green indicators active on the adapter, then follow these steps:

  1. Unplug the power from the back and plug it back in after 5-10 seconds to reset the device.
  2. After the reboot, wait for power to stop flashing.
  3. Check that the internet icon has come on to a green state, if not contact IT to have the cable and connection checked.
  4. If the internet icon is solid but the phone icon is not, then try reconnecting the cable on the back of the adapter.
  5. If the phone icon is still off, let Nexacomm support know so they can check for any activity from the device.
